The Friend | Sigrid Nunez
TW: Suicide
Rife with literary references and tangents, The Friend is a string of many interwoven ideas about life, death, and writing.
An unnamed protagonist is having a hard time dealing with the death of her beloved friend and mentor. Then she is informed that he has decided she is to be responsible for his beloved Great Dane, Apollo. She takes on this task apprehensively, mostly because her rent-controlled apartment in NYC doesn't allow dogs.
None of the characters are named in the book, most are called "my friend who...", which can be confusing at times. But Nunez's pondering on the meaning of life and learning about the history of suicide of writers are worth all the side stories.
We both read this book and both give it ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4 stars! Reading and discussing this book created spark that gave inspiration for us to start this blog. The Friend talks a lot about how everyone wants to write, but not everyone's writing is worth reading. Hope you're finding ours to be at least a bit entertaining.
