Malibu Rising | Taylor Jenkins Reid
Four siblings are left to fend for themselves when their deadbeat, but also very famous, father leaves their alcoholic mother. During this time, Nina, Jay, Hud, and Kit discover their love for surfing. Being the oldest sister, Nina has always taken care of the Riva siblings. She takes over the family restaurant and makes sure the family is provided for. It seems even after they find success in the surfing industry as adults, she’s still the one holding the family together.
Now, in 1983, Nina has been left by her husband, but the annual Riva party must go on. What once started as a kegger with cheap alcohol and pretzel bowls, has now turned into an elaborate catered event. The siblings will throw the biggest bash of the decade in Malibu with the promise of celebrities and unexpected shenanigans. IYKYK. We follow the 24-hour timeline on the day of this party and things don't necessarily go as planned. What unexpected guests will show up? How will the party end?
We both read this and very much enjoyed the way TJR captured us the moment we turned to the first page. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4 stars. This gave us less dark and more "cowabunga-dude" vibes of Lucy Foley's The Guest List. The similar timeline and pacing provided an extremely entertaining and gasp-worthy story. Our main qualm was the lack of diversity. Do better, TJR!
Thanks to NetGalley and Ballantine Books for providing the eARC on Kindle. Malibu Rising will be available on June 1, 2021.
