Of Women and Salt | Gabriela Garcia
Generations of women striving for more. Immigrants, revolutionaries, mothers, addicts. The book follows an untraditional and inconsistent timeline starting in 19th Century Cuba, eventually heading to modern day Miami, Mexico, Texas and Cuba. We see lines of women working to escape — or change — their situations. We see two families, with women living their own realities, and then learn how they intertwine.
Jeanette is a recovering addict trying to earn her mother's trust. One day she sees ICE agents outside of her neighbor's apartment and watches them take her away. Soon, the neighbor's daughter is dropped off by a babysitter. Jeanette then takes her in until her mother intervenes.
An Alicia pick ⭐⭐⭐⭐✨ 4.5 stars. I listened to the audiobook version and it was wonderful. I loved that the book came from solely a female perspective. The version I listened to on Libby ended with a conversation with the author, where she talks about the process and origin stories of the novel, which I really enjoyed.
